Reading lists and awards

Alex Awards* – Each year this award is given to 10 outstanding books written for adults that have special appeal to young adults ages 12 to 18. Current and past lists are available on the website.

Maverick Graphic Novel Reading List – Some of the best recent graphic novels for grades 6-12, developed by Texas public and school librarians.

William C. Morris Award* – Looking for the best new stuff? This award honors a debut book written by a first time author for teens. A winner and 4 honor books are announced each January.

Odyssey Award* – Would you rather listen than read? This is a list of the best audiobooks produced for children and/or young adults.

Michael L. Printz Award* – This is basically the Newbery Award for older readers. The award recognizes a book that exemplifies literary excellence in young adult literature.

NPR Books 100 Best-Ever Teen Novels – NPR’s 2012 best books poll featured teen fiction. The poll brought in 75,220 votes from NPR audience members and was moderated by a panel of three book editors and a teacher librarian.

Tayshas – A list of books selected for young adults, grades 9-12, that is designed to encourage reading for pleasure. Read just for fun – no school assignments here. Ultimate Teen Reading List – Forget the boring reading lists from school, this list was launched by teens and staffers in 2006 to highlight the perfect choices for reading and discussing. These 400 titles range from young adult books to adult books they think would be enjoyed by teens. Share with your teacher, create a book club, or just enjoy on your own.

Texas Lone Star List – A recommended reading list developed by public and school librarians to encourage kids in grades 6, 7, and 8 to explore a variety of current books. In other words, some of the best titles from the past two years.
